Post-Operative Instructions: Dental Implants

Dental implant surgery is a common and effective way to replace missing teeth and restore your smile. After the procedure, it's essential to follow post-operative instructions to ensure a smooth and comfortable recovery. Here's what you need to know:

FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE DAY:

  1. Do not spit. Use a tissue to wipe your mouth as needed or swallow your saliva.
  2. Do not use a drinking straw. Drink straight from the cup.
  3. Do not smoke. Smoking can dislodge the blood clot and increase the risk of infection.
  4. Keep fingers and tongue away from the surgical area. Any disturbance to the surgical site can lead to bleeding and complications.

BLEEDING:

Some minor bleeding is expected after dental implant surgery, but it should subside quickly and stop within an hour or two. If bleeding persists:

  1. Keep gauze on the surgical area with some biting pressure for 30–45 minutes.
  2. If bleeding continues, contact your dental office for guidance.

SWELLING:

Swelling is common after surgery and can vary in severity. It may increase during the first 24-48 hours before starting to subside. Some bruising on the face may also occur. To manage swelling:

  1. Apply cold packs to the affected area for the first 24 hours.
  2. Elevate your head while sleeping to reduce swelling.
  3. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help alleviate discomfort and inflammation as directed by your dentist.

DIET:

After surgery, you can start with non-abrasive, soft foods as soon as the local anesthetic wears off. Avoid chewing directly on the implant sites. As you feel comfortable, transition back to your regular diet.

ORAL HYGIENE:

Maintaining good oral hygiene is essential for a successful recovery:

  1. You can start rinsing gently with warm salt water (1 tsp of salt in 8 ounces of warm water) the day after surgery.
  2. Brush your teeth as usual but be cautious around the surgical sites.
  3. Use a soft-bristle toothbrush to minimize irritation.

SUTURES:

Unless instructed otherwise, the sutures used are dissolvable and will fall out on their own. This typically occurs within the first week but may take up to 10 days.

BONE GRAFT MATERIAL:

If bone graft material was used during your procedure, you might notice gritty material in your mouth. This is normal and should subside within a day or two.

WILL I BE ABLE TO SEE THE IMPLANT?

The visibility of the implant depends on its location and stability. In some cases, the implant may be buried under gum tissue initially. In others, an attachment may protrude through the gum. Your dentist will uncover the implant when it's time for restoration.

WHEN CAN THE CROWN BE PLACED?

A dental crown can be attached to the implant after osseointegration, where the implant fuses with the bone. The timeline for osseointegration varies from case to case and will be discussed with your surgeon based on bone quality, quantity, and implant stability.

MEDICATIONS:

Follow your prescribed medications carefully:

  1. Antibiotics: Finish the entire course to prevent infection.
  2. Pain Medicine: Take as directed for the first 24 hours, and then as needed. Be aware of potential drowsiness from narcotics and avoid certain activities.
  3. **Wean off narcotic medication and switch to acetaminophen (Tylenol®) as advised.
  4. If directed, use ibuprofen for the first 4 or 5 days.

ACTIVITY:

Once you're off narcotic pain medication, you can gradually resume your normal activities. Start with light exercise and slowly return to your usual routine.
