Orthodontics is used to fix bite problems, crooked teeth, crowded teeth and other problems people have with their teeth. However, not too many people know what to expect before, during and after treatment. To help make the process easier, we have decided to provide some information on what expect.
What to expect during orthodontic treatment
The orthodontic treatment process includes but is not limited to the following:
Consultation
Every treatment begins with a consultation, where the patient tells their orthodontist what their problem is, get their teeth evaluated and have their dental records examined. During the consultation, the dentist and patient will go over the treatment options and costs before deciding on how best to proceed.
First appointment
Once the evaluation is done and the treatment option has been chosen, the dentist will have the patient come in for their first appointment. During this time the dentist will be getting more information about the patient’s mouth. The orthodontist will make a mold of the teeth and likely take some pictures and X-rays, which will provide them with the information they need to create the braces, retainers, aligner trays or whatever type of treatment the patient is using. In some cases, this can be done during the consultation.
Second appointment
During this appointment, the orthodontist will fit the braces or retainers to the patient’s mouth. If they are getting braces, the orthodontist will bond the brackets to the surface of the patient’s teeth and attach the wires that run through the brackets. After that, they may add rubber bands, which work with the wires to pull the teeth into the desired position. If the patient is getting clear aligners, the dentist will fit them in the patient’s mouth and make any necessary adjustments.
The dentist will also tell the patient how to properly take care of their braces or retainers so they can last as long as possible without getting damaged or damaging the patient’s teeth.
Follow up appointment
When it comes to orthodontics, there are usually a lot of follow up appointments involved. These appointments usually happen every four to eight weeks depending on the patient’s needs. During the appointments, the orthodontist will tighten the wires on the braces and put in new rubber bands. If the patient is using clear aligners, the orthodontist will provide new aligner trays during these appointments.
Final appointment
This appointment occurs when treatment is over and the patient’s teeth have moved into the desired position. For patients that used braces, the orthodontist will remove the brackets and wires as well as the stains that were caused by wearing the braces for an extended period. They will also let the patient know if they need follow-up treatments, which may include retainers and mouthguards.
Conclusion
Orthodontics can be used to improve the appearance and functionality of your teeth, helping to improve your oral health. If you are considering getting orthodontic treatment, you should now have a better idea of what to expect during treatment.
