Learn How a CEREC Dentist Can Restore Your Smile

For patients getting ready to undergo dental restoration with a CEREC® dentist, worries are common. Many patients are concerned that their smiles may be impacted, such as if a new crown does not quite match the color of their existing teeth. In fact, this technique uses Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramic® technology to create precisely fitted dental restorations that leave patients with natural-looking, fully restored smiles.

How does the CEREC® process work?

For patients tired of having messy and uncomfortable dental impressions taken, CEREC® technology is a welcome change. To produce a crown, inlay or other restoration, a dentist uses CEREC® technology to scan the affected tooth or teeth. The technology creates a digital impression of the area, which is then used to create a computerized model of the restoration needed. In this phase, a CEREC® dentist can view the model and make changes as needed.

The computerized model of the restoration is then used to create a physical model. Many dental offices have the necessary machines to produce the restoration right in the office. Using the computerized restoration model as a guide, these machines carve a dental restoration from a solid block of ceramic or similar material.

In dental offices without the necessary machines, the computerized model is sent to a nearby dental laboratory. The patient is fitted with a temporary restoration. Once the laboratory-made restoration is mailed to the dental office, the CEREC® dentist places it.

What types of restorations can CEREC® produce?

CEREC® technology is extremely versatile and can be used to create a wide range of dental restorations.

What

Crowns are a common dental restoration. Patients who see a CEREC® dentist often are able to have a crown placed more quickly, especially if the dental office has the necessary technology to produce the crown.

Inlays and onlays

Inlays and onlays are sometimes used to fill larger cavities. Inlays cover the area between tooth cusps, while onlays cover at least one cusp. Since these types of fillings are larger than composite fillings, they can be very noticeable if they do not match the surrounding teeth. CEREC® has the advantage of both looking natural and being very durable.

Bridges and implants

CEREC® technology can also be used to replace missing teeth. Certain types of bridges can be made using this technology. CEREC® implants can often be placed in a single visit, taking some of the hassle out of having an implant.

Veneers

Dental veneers are thin coverings that can be bonded to the front surface of teeth. They are usually used to improve the appearance of teeth that are stained, chipped or discolored. The durability of CEREC® restorations makes them a good choice for patients in need of dental veneers.
