Dental Crowns to Transform Stained Teeth

Dental crowns are often made of tooth-colored materials. A dentist may use a dental crown to cover your front tooth. You can benefit from getting crowns on your teeth if they are stained. Crowns can help improve your appearance and give you a bright smile again.

Dental crowns and stained teeth

Tooth discoloration may be caused by a variety of factors. Discoloration can occur by consuming common drinks and foods, or by using mouthwashes. It can also be caused due to issues with the formation of the tooth enamel. Stained teeth can occur as people age.

Particular chemicals or medications taken by a pregnant woman or by a young child can interfere with the development of the tooth enamel and can lead to the tooth becoming discolored, pitted or mottled. Individuals who smoke can also stain their teeth. People are usually advised to avoid beverages, foods and substances that are known to stain teeth to stop further discoloration. Fortunately, if the discoloration is severe, dental crowns can help.

Severely discolored teeth

Dental crowns are usually associated with decayed or broken teeth. However, an increasing number of people are using them to cover discolored teeth. Tooth stains can go away with professional whitening. In the case of severe discoloration, though, a dentist may suggest dental crowns to cover the stained teeth.

Crown placement

Multiple steps are involved in the placement of crowns and most times two dental visits are needed to finish the treatment. The first step involves the dentist preparing the tooth. The dentist will remove the outer portion of the tooth so the crown can fit. Any decay will be removed and if additional tooth structure is required to support it, the dentist will build up the core of the tooth.

An impression will be made in order to provide the model of the crown. The patient will get a temporary crown while waiting for the permanent crown to be ready. According to the American Dental Association, this usually takes less than two weeks. While a patient has a temporary crown, the tooth can be sensitive to hot and cold. Patients are advised to avoid sticky foods and chewing gum during this period.

The dentist will then use the model to make the crown. When it is ready, the dentist will place it in a patient’s mouth and proceed to make the necessary adjustments. When a patient and dentist are satisfied with how the crown looks and feels, it will be cemented in place. When crowns are cemented into place, they fully encase the visible portion of a stained tooth that lies above and at the gumline.

Contact your dentist

Tooth discoloration is a cosmetic concern. Dental crowns are a good option for the restoration of stained teeth. If you want whiter teeth and to restore your bright smile, consult your dentist. Your dentist can help you determine if dental crowns can keep both your crowns and natural teeth gleaming white. With proper guidance, you will be proud of your smile again.
